The Indie Spirit Film Festival (ISFF) is an annual event for filmmakers (professionals and students) and film lovers alike, with a superb program of feature films, shorts, docs, animation, and many other films from around the world. The ISFF showcases the work of independent filmmakers amidst the mountainous backdrop of Colorado Springs, Colorado, just one hour south of Denver.
ISFF is about filmmakers, audiences, distributors and film professionals establishing a relationship and supporting independent film. ISFF has showcased an average of over 100 films from all over the globe, covering a variety of subjects and genres in three years. The festival has quickly become Colorado Springs' largest film festival, with numerous filmmakers and film fans attending screenings, Q & A sessions, filmmaker panels, parties and receptions. Boasting a broad, unrestricted selection of films, ISFF
presents genre-specific awards, as well as Best Short, Feature,
Documentary and Festival Director's Choice. Several films from previous
years have achieved further success on the festival circuit and
many films from all three years are available on DVD.
Now in its 4th year, the 2011 Indie Spirit Film Festival
will take place April 14-17, 2011.
Synopsis:
In the isolated, frozen town of Barrow, Alaska,
Iñupiaq teenagers Qalli and Aivaaq have grown up like brothers in a
tight-knit community defined as much by ancient traditions as by hip-hop
and snowmobiles. Early one morning, on a seal hunt with their friend
James, a tussle turns violent, and James is killed. Panic stricken,
terrified, and with no one to blame but themselves, Qalli and Aivaaq lie
and declare the death a tragic accident. As Barrow roils with grief and
his protective father becomes suspicious, Qalli stumbles through
guilt-filled days, wrestling with his part in the death. For the first
time in his life, hes treading alone on existential ice.
In this utterly engrossing, suspenseful feature-film debut by award-winning short filmmaker Andrew Okpeaha MacLean, the snowy Arctic
plains embody Qallis lost innocence, while the claustrophobic town
mirrors his entrapment, as he trudges through layers of deceit and the
gauntlet of how to be a friend and a man.
